No plans to sell Zune HD outside US

September 11th, 2009 by chris

In what can be described as bizarre, Microsoft has confirmed that the Zune HD will not be sold anywhere outside of the US. Our friends up to the north are even excluded from the Zune HD. We’re sure that some make their way over the border via eBay. So, why the US only distribution? ArsTechnica received the dirt directly from Microsoft.

“For the time being the Zune HD device will remain US-only,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Ars. “Right now we are focused on deploying an exciting service in the form of Zune Video to 18 markets. We are looking at potential future hardware experiences for these markets, but do not have anything to announce right now.”

Some speculate this is Microsoft testing the landscape before releasing in other markets. If the reviews are positive next week, don’t be surprised if this plan changes and fast. This is not a cellphone, therefore not tied to carrier based restrictions or exclusivity. If Microsoft wants to sell the Zune HD overseas on in Canada, nothing is holding them back.

With the announcement that Microsoft has discontinued all previous Zune models, we are starting to see deals on existing models as retailers look to clear inventory before the September 15th Zune HD launch. The latest deal comes courtesy of Woot Sellout. They are selling a Zune bundle featuring a refurbished 80GB Zune plus a home audio/video pack at $139.99. The lowest price we’ve seen for the 80GB Zune alone is $199.99. Act quick as the deal ends starts and ends today.

All Legacy Zune Models Discontinued

September 2nd, 2009 by chris

In what you’d call a surprising move, Microsoft has decided to discontinue all existing Zune models. Going forward, the company will focus on Zune HD devices only. If you had your heart set on one of the existing models, chances are good that you’ll be able to find one on the cheap as we get closer to the Zune HD release on September 15th.

Zune 4.0 Software To Offer HD Movies

August 29th, 2009 by chris

When the Zune software gets updated from 4.0, the Zune marketplace will offer HD movies. You will have the capability to download HD movies for playing on either the Zune HD or your PC. No word yet on what companies will be offering movies. We’re guessing Pixar will not be on the list.

August 24th, 2009 by chris

At a Best Buy demo, one astute video taker managed to secure video of the Zune HD showing an Apps menu with Zune Marketplace. Microsoft has yet to discuss apps in detail, although many speculate they are looking at creating their version of Apple’s highly successful App Store.

Microsoft Recruiting Apple Developers for Zune HD

August 14th, 2009 by chris

Microsoft might be looking to developers from Apple’s App Store to kick start development for the Zune HD. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber received an email from a iPhone developer who was contacted by Microsoft. According the developer, he was offered a “bucket of money” to port his Twitter application to the Zune HD. For some strange reason (perhaps his dislike of money), the developer turned down the offer.

If the Zune turns into a full fledged mobile platform, including phone, perhaps this particular developer might be kicking himself. The fact that Microsoft is reaching out to top developers certainly bodes well for seeing good “ready for primetime” apps on the Zune HD.

Facebook and Twitter please.
