Zune HD to Get Twitter, Facebook Apps and abandons ’squirting’

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 by chris

One of the features found on Zune players was the ability to share music wirelessly up to 3 Zune devices. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer dubbed it “squirting”. Poor terminology and evidently not a popular feature as the company has decided to abandon the proximity sharing feature. Among the new features, Microsoft confirmed the new Zune HD will feature apps and 3D gaming.

The company has promised both Twitter and Facebook apps will be released by the end of this year. Surprisingly, the company is not launching a third party app store to compete with Apple’s App Store, at least not at this time. Microsoft is focused on bringing a small selection of apps to the Zune HD. The company will either develop them in house or work closely with the developers. On the gaming front, expect to see Project Gotham Racing and Audiosurf Tilt among others.

Microsoft Recruiting Apple Developers for Zune HD

Friday, August 14th, 2009 by chris

Microsoft might be looking to developers from Apple’s App Store to kick start development for the Zune HD. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber received an email from a iPhone developer who was contacted by Microsoft. According the developer, he was offered a “bucket of money” to port his Twitter application to the Zune HD. For some strange reason (perhaps his dislike of money), the developer turned down the offer.

If the Zune turns into a full fledged mobile platform, including phone, perhaps this particular developer might be kicking himself. The fact that Microsoft is reaching out to top developers certainly bodes well for seeing good “ready for primetime” apps on the Zune HD.

Facebook and Twitter please.
